Drivers and passengers traveling through the Loilem toll gate in southern Shan State are facing increasing harassment, extortion, and threats at the hands of the Military Council’s Drug Enforcement and Anti-Human Trafficking Police Forces, witnesses report.
On March 8, officers halted a Taunggyi-Namsang passenger bus without providing any explanation, forcing drivers out of their vehicles and confiscating their ID cards, according to eyewitness accounts.
“They made us exit the car and seized our IDs without a word. Then, they took us to their officer. Our vehicle was fully licensed, and we had nothing illegal onboard. But they pointed a gun at us without even questioning us first,” a driver recounted to SHAN. “They claimed to have verbal orders from the regional commander to inspect any vehicle they wanted.”
Locals accuse Police Chief Tin Htun Aung from the Drug Enforcement Division and Deputy Police Chief Tin Maung Myint from the Anti-Human Trafficking Police of using their authority to extort money from passengers under false pretenses.
“They stop vehicles, search passengers one by one, and intimidate them. Some officers even appear drunk while conducting checks,” said a driver operating on the Taunggyi-Namsang route.
“They started inspections at 8 AM and detained travelers until 11 AM without explanation. They pushed and shoved people and, when passengers protested, they threatened to charge them with obstructing official duties.”
Drivers warn that female passengers are especially vulnerable to harassment at these checkpoints and urge extra caution.
Since November 2024, the military council in Loilem has allegedly been coercing arrested drug users into serving as guards at city entry and exit points, further raising concerns about security and human rights violations.
The Loilem toll gate remains the only route between Taunggyi and Namsang, making it unavoidable for travelers who must endure daily extortion and abuse. Despite growing complaints, authorities have yet to take any action.
Residents and travelers continue to call for an end to these oppressive practices, demanding accountability from those in power.
