A military shelling in a village near the Shan-Karenni border in Southern Shan State on March 1 has left several civilians dead and others injured, including children, intensifying the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
According to sources, an artillery shell fired by the military landed on a villager’s field, killing a teenage girl and wounding multiple others. A child was among the injured, some of whom sustained serious wounds.
“The shell struck a field where villagers were present. Tragically, a young girl lost her life, and several others, including a child, were hurt. Medical teams responded swiftly, but some injuries were severe,” a local source told SHAN.
Emergency responders from the Mong Pai (Moe Bye) rescue team and medical personnel rushed to the scene, treating the wounded. Those in critical condition were transferred to a hospital for urgent care.
Meanwhile, clashes between the military and revolutionary forces continue in Mong Pai, with reports suggesting that the State Administration Council (SAC) has been using incendiary and chemical weapons. A local source disclosed that the army is preparing a large-scale offensive to regain control of the contested town.
Since January 4, the 422nd Infantry Battalion has been locked in intense fighting with revolutionary forces. In response, the military council has escalated its offensive, launching both ground and air strikes in an effort to reassert dominance.
As hostilities rage on, thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in nearby villages or makeshift shelters along the border. Many displaced civilians face dire shortages of food, medical supplies, and safe passage. Local humanitarian organizations are calling for immediate intervention, warning that the crisis is deepening with each passing day.
With the situation in Mong Pai growing increasingly volatile, the need for urgent humanitarian aid and international attention has never been greater.
