Many Shan people have been devastated by the escalating conflict in northern Shan State. This is because the 1027 Operation’s second wave, which was led by the Three Brotherhood Alliance (3BHA), caused widespread displacement, and casualties.
The fighting erupted in the townships of Nawngkhio, Kyaukme, and Lashio which was initiated by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in a joint offensive with the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) against the Myanmar military.
Despite the deteriorating situation, the Shan people lack a central entity to turn to for support. The tragedy is heightened by the disunity among the various Shan armed groups, which frequently engage in conflict rather than presenting a unified front against the military. Additionally, other Shan stakeholders such as the political parties have remained silent making the people continue suffering.
This circumstance has sparked feelings of frustration and disillusionment among the Shan people. Many of them, particularly young people, are compelled to flee their homes because other ethnic armed organizations expand their territories.
The stakeholders who purport to represent the Shan people fail to take action in their defense. Thus, this raises a great concern for a cohesive national identity and the unity of the Shan people.
The well-being of the Shan people and their hopes for nation-building are at risk due to the current state of affairs. Therefore, the Shan leaders must ensure the safety and welfare of their people. And if they continue to ignore the plight of the people, they will face immeasurable suffering and also erode trust and impede future efforts to secure public support.
What the Shan leaders must do is prioritize the safeguarding of its people and take action. Unity is essential for the resolution of this crisis and the attainment of any future goals.
