Heavy clashes between Myanmar’s military junta and allied resistance groups have entered a second week near Hsawng Pyaung village in Panglong (ပၢင်လွင်း-Pinlaung) Township, Shan State, approximately 100 miles from the regime’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw, according to local sources.
The violence began on May 17 when combined units of the Karen National Defense Force (KNDF) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF) launched coordinated assaults on junta troops and the Pa-O National Organization (PNO) militia stationed near Hsawng Pyaung.
“Fighting persists not only in Hsawng Pyaung but also in neighboring Ye Nat and Hti Khot villages along the eastern bank,” a local resident told SHAN. “The village alone is home to over 1,000 people, but now an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 civilians have fled, seeking refuge in nearby communities or with relatives.”
An aid worker assisting displaced families confirmed that more than 1,000 households from Hsawng Pyaung have been uprooted. “With the onset of the rainy season, displaced families desperately need food supplies, rice, oil, salt, and basic shelter materials like bamboo,” the worker said. “If the conflict drags on, starvation and exposure will become critical threats.”
Humanitarian access remains severely constrained. Panglong Township lacks formal displacement camps, and relief efforts have dwindled due to security risks. “Initial aid deliveries have stalled because of roadblocks and tightened military checkpoints,” the aid worker added. “Movement is now too dangerous for volunteers and donors.”
SHAN reached out to KNDF spokesperson Tar Ael Soe for comment but received no response by publication time.
Meanwhile, the PNO militia acknowledged ongoing hostilities in a social media statement, claiming its forces, backed by drone strikes, are repelling KNDF, PDF, and allied fighters.
The contested area lies along the strategic Panglong, Pai Khun (Pekon), Mong Pai (Mobye), Loikaw road, a crucial junta supply route for operations in Karenni State. Resistance forces are reportedly targeting military outposts in Pai Khun and Mong Pai to block regime reinforcements from advancing into Karenni territory.
Junta troops, aiming to reclaim control of this vital corridor, have escalated operations across multiple townships, including Hsihseng, Nyaungshwe, and Panglong.
