Voting Population Rises in Shan State

The electorate of Shan State will increase by nearly a third during the 2020 general elections compared to the 2015 election, the Shan State Election Commission found.

Htin Kyaw, chair of the Shan State Election Commission, said 3.5 million will cast ballots when polling stations open on November 8, compared with 3.1 million who voted in the last election, which is an increase of 28.8 percent.

More than 400,000 are young people, who will vote in an election for the first time in their lives, he said. And there are over 4,000 disabled people who will cast their ballots.

Htin Kyaw said that in this election, Burma Army soldiers and members of their families will cast their ballots at public polling stations and not at army bases.
