Three women in their early 20s were rescued in the Myanmar–China border town of Muse after being lured by a fraudulent job offer and forced into the sex trade, according to local social aid groups.
The victims contacted the Myint Myat Parami Blood Donors and Social Aid Association by phone to seek help. In coordination with the Lapphet Nyunt Social Aid Association, a rescue operation was carried out at around midnight on March 23, 2026.
According to aid workers, the groups were required to negotiate with the employer and pay a sum of money to secure the women’s release.
The three women had traveled from Naypyidaw after being recruited by a broker who promised them legitimate work at a massage parlor in Muse. However, upon arrival, they were reportedly pressured into providing sexual services.
“According to the women, the broker told them it was a standard massage parlor. But when they arrived, they were pressured and forced into prostitution. They refused and resisted the demands,” a spokesperson from the Lapphet Nyunt Social Aid Association told SHAN.
Within days of arriving, the women were allegedly threatened by the employer after refusing to comply. They were told they owed 1,720,000 kyats (around $440) for travel and other expenses and would only be released after repaying the amount.
The women are currently being sheltered at the Myint Myat Parami Association office while arrangements are being made for their return to Naypyidaw.
“Physically and mentally, they are in stable condition. They did not sustain any physical injuries. We are doing our best to provide them with the care they need,” an association official said.
Social aid organizations have warned of the increasing use of fraudulent job offers targeting young women, particularly in border areas. They urge job seekers to carefully verify employment opportunities and avoid offers promising unusually high wages or “easy” work.
Authorities have been informed of the case and have begun questioning the victims. However, it remains unclear whether legal action will be taken against those involved.
