The Shan Literature and Culture Association of Thailand held a meeting at Wat Kutao Monastery in Chiang Mai, bringing together Shan communities from across the country, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, and Bangkok.
The event opened with remarks by Khuensai Jaiyen, who emphasized Shan/Tai unity by quoting Benjamin Franklin: “I will speak ill of no man, and speak all the good I know of everybody.” He noted that such a spirit of goodwill is essential for strengthening cohesion among the Shan people.
Sakda Saenmi, Secretary-General of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Thailand, presented an overview of the Indigenous Peoples’ Movement in Thailand. Thai scholar Chupinit Kiatmanee also spoke, explaining the historical origins and usage of the terms Tai and Tai Yai.
Following discussions, participants collectively decided to identify themselves as “ไตย” (Tai) in everyday and cultural contexts, while reserving the term “ไทยใหญ่” (Thai Yai) for official use by the Thai government.
