Five people were injured and 15 houses and a monastery were destroyed in a junta airstrike on Kyaukme Town in northern Shan State on 29 June 2025.

The airstrike was carried out by a junta fighter jet at about 2:30 pm on 29 June. It dropped two bombs near to the Kanbawza Shan Monastery in Ward 1 of Kyaukme Town, which is under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).

The attack injured five villagers, three of whom were women and destroyed the Kanbawza Shan Monastery and around 15 nearby houses, according to residents of Kyaukme Town who spoke to SHAN.

A statement issued by the TNLA said that the junta jet had dropped two 250-pound bombs that had injured six people, four men and two women, and destroyed 10 houses.

A resident of Kyaukme town said: “The main target was most likely an office building just south of the monastery. But the attack ended up damaging many parts of the monastery itself. Nearby houses and shops were also hit. A phone shop, a pharmacy, all destroyed. Altogether, five people were injured.”

This was the third airstrike that the junta had launched in the last week on Kyaukme Town, all of which caused significant casualties and widespread destruction of property.

There two earlier airstrikes on Kyaukme Town were on 24 and 26 June. Over the course of the attack junta planes dropped four bombs that killed five people, injured a further 16, including two children and destroyed about 50 houses and two schools, according to the TNLA.

Whilst the junta organised Peace Forum was being held in the Myanmar capital, Naypyidaw, from 25 to 27 June the junta carried out large-scale bombings of the TNLA controlled townships of Mogok in Mandalay Region, and Kyaukme and Nawnghkio (Naungcho) in northern Shan State.

Currently there is ongoing fierce fighting between the junta and a TNLA-led resistance coalition in Nawnghkio Township. Fighting on the ground there has intensified with both sides using drones and artillery, while junta aircraft continue to drop bombs.

Because of the ongoing fighting around 2,000 residents of Nawnghkio Town have fled to Nawngping Subtownship in Kyaukme Township, where they urgently need food and other aid.
