Hundreds of trucks carrying goods from Eastern Shan State have been detained by Myanmar’s military at the Computer and Technology Science Institute compound in Hopong Township, according to local sources.
A source told SHAN that the military is citing tax-related issues as the reason for the mass detentions.
“These trucks are mostly transporting goods from Tachileik. If the owners contact the authorities and pay, the trucks are released. There are hundreds of vehicles involved, and many have been parked in different locations, not just inside the camp. The exact number is difficult to determine. Whether a truck is allowed to continue or sent back often depends on negotiations between military personnel and officials from the General Administration Department,” the source explained.
A truck driver traveling the route also confirmed the situation, saying many of the detained trucks were transporting Thai-made goods.
“We drive this road daily and see large trucks parked both along the roadside and inside the camp. Most of them are from Tachileik and appear to have been seized due to tax-related issues linked to the Thai products they are carrying,” the driver said.
The crackdown has not only affected trucks coming directly from Eastern Shan State. Drivers report that trucks traveling between Eastern and Southern Shan States have also faced detentions and inspections along the way.
Since early 2025, checkpoints operated by the military council across Southern and Eastern Shan States have reportedly intensified inspections of passenger vehicles, trucks, and trailers, leading to increased delays and uncertainty for transport operators.
