Junta Troops Detain Eight Civilians During Security Sweep in Ywangan

Myanmar military troops have detained eight civilians from Ok Twin Village following clashes with local resistance fighters in Ywangan Township, as escalating conflict has plunged the area into a deepening security vacuum.

The confrontation broke out at around 3:00 p.m. on July 18 when a junta military column advancing toward Kyauk Nghet Village encountered resistance forces. According to local sources, the ensuing firefight was brief but resulted in casualties among junta troops.

The following day, July 19, military personnel conducted sweep operations in Ok Twin Village, detaining eight residents. None of those detained have been allowed to contact their families since their arrest.

“The clash didn’t last very long. The military was caught off guard, and there were casualties on their side. The day after the battle, eight people from Ok Twin were arrested,” a local resident told SHAN.

Following the clashes, military troops fortified their positions in both Ok Twin and Kyauk Nghet villages, imposing strict movement restrictions that have left farmers too fearful to tend their fields during the critical growing season.

The arrests coincide with a broader military buildup along the Ywangan–Aungban corridor. Following a separate clash near Ngu Chaung on July 16, the military deployed heavy reinforcements along the highway, establishing a dense network of checkpoints.

“Living in Ywangan has become miserable. We constantly hear about fighting and murders. When traveling, there are about five different checkpoints. They make motorcyclists open their storage compartments, thoroughly search vehicles, and, if they suspect anything, interrogate people and sometimes demand money,” a local woman told SHAN.

Residents say that as control of Ywangan Township remains contested between junta forces and resistance groups, public security has all but collapsed. Unsolved crimes—including robberies, thefts, rapes, and targeted killings—have surged, with no effective administrative authority maintaining law and order.

Violence has escalated across the township in recent weeks. On July 14, a member of the Danu National Democracy Party (DNDP) and another civilian were killed in Nyaung Pin Khwa Village.

Local monitors said that between May and July, at least 13 people—including local administrators, members of the pro-military Pyu Saw Htee militia, and civilians—were killed amid the worsening lawlessness.
