While silent strike is in progress, Pro-military demonstration held in Hopong

Even though some people organized a demonstration to support the military junta, very few people were seen in the city of Hopong township, Southern Shan State.

On 1 February 2022, while civilians nationwide was participating in the silent strike to mark one year of the military coup which took place in 1st February last year,  demonstrating in support of the military junta was held in Hopong township.

“The military junta came and dropped off their people. There are about 50 people, they came in with 4 cars,” a Hopong resident told SHAN.

It is reported that those 50 people were dropped off at one of the Hopong’s monasteries around 1 P.M in order to march and show support of the military junta.

“Even though they did pro-military movement, there were very few people in the city. Some shops which faced a threat from the military junta had no choice but to open their shops,” another Hopong resident told SHAN anonymously due to safety concern.

On 1st February 2022, while people nationwide were organizing the silent strike, military junta arranged the pro-military movements, and shops were threaten to face a lawsuit if they did not open.

A similar pro-military demonstration was organized in Tachileik township, Eastern Shan State, on the 1st February. It was reported that a couple of explosives went off near the area; however, there was no casualties reported.
