Facilities for a COVID-19 laboratory arrived at the Sao San Htun hospital in the Shan State capital of Taunggyi this month.

Dr. Poe Poe Lin, the head of the virology department at the hospital, said that “90 percent” of the equipment is in place.

“The machine for the COVID-19 laboratory has arrived, but we still need two machine tools,” Dr. Poe Poe Lin said. “We also need other related materials. The lab building is already complete.”

He added that funds are still needed to complete the lab, which may happen by mid-July.

“If we get the budget for it, we can buy some tools. Then we can operate our lab,” the doctor said.

Once it is operational, the lab would be capable of testing for COVID-19 in rounds of 96 tests each time, with a processing time of up to three hours.

The testing machine has been installed since early July, according to hospital authorities. It was among facilities for two laboratories donated to Sao San Htun hospital by the Ngwe Kaba Aung gem company.
