Two civilians were killed in separate landmine explosions in Kyaukme Township, Shan State, on September 29, according to local charitable groups.
At around 10:00 AM, a cemetery caretaker was killed instantly after stepping on a landmine while disposing of ashes at Aye Chan Thar Cemetery, an area under the control of the Ta’ang (Palaung) National Liberation Army (TNLA).
Later the same day, at around 4:30 PM, a 14-year-old boy herding cattle near the same cemetery also stepped on a mine and was killed on the spot, an official from the Nam Khong Tai Charitable Organization (Nam Khong Shan Philanthropic Association) told SHAN.
“It happened twice in one day. The first victim was a man clearing ashes at the cemetery, and the second was a child returning from herding cattle. Both died instantly,” the official said.
The victims were identified as Ko Oo, 55, and Aik Law, 14. Locals have been urged to exercise extreme caution in and around the cemetery following the incidents.
Meanwhile, the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO) reported that four men in Naung Lin village, Nawnghkio Township—recently retaken by the military council—also stepped on landmines and are struggling to access medical care.
According to TWO, a child from Nar Shi village and a man from Kyauk Kyann village in the Taung Shay tract of Nawnghkio also suffered serious landmine injuries and are currently being treated at Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital.
