Artillery and Airstrikes Kill Civilians in Kyaukme and Hsipaw Townships

On the night of September 4, an artillery shell fired from the junta-controlled side of Nawng Ping, Kyaukme Township, struck Koon Kaw village in Hkur Nim village tract, killing two civilians, according to local sources.

“A married couple from Mak Man–Koon Kaw village was killed by the shelling. The roads are blocked, so we can’t retrieve the bodies. Many houses in the village were also damaged,” said a Kyaukme resident assisting displaced people.

The victims have been identified as U Wa Ya Ma and Daw Hla Khin. Their bodies remain unretrieved.

This incident follows a similar attack on August 29, when artillery fire from Nawnghkio hit Hkaik Ton Houng village in Nar Aik Kant village tract, Kyaukme Township, killing 51-year-old U Soe Maung, according to locals.

Meanwhile, the Military launched airstrikes on September 3 in Hsipaw Township, an area under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). Around 2 p.m., two bombs were dropped on Baw Kyo village, injuring one man and damaging several homes.

“We went to check the area bombed by the plane. They dropped two bombs; one hit a house directly. One person was injured, but we don’t yet know his exact age,” a Hsipaw resident told SHAN.
This marks the 11th airstrike in three months on Hsipaw town. On August 18, airstrikes on the West and South wards also injured two civilians.

According to a TNLA statement released on September 1, at least 46 civilians—including children, women, and monks—were killed in August, and nearly 60 more were injured, as a result of airstrikes, artillery shelling, and drone attacks by the Military across Mongkut (Mogok), Kyaukme, Mongngaw, Hsipaw, and Monglon townships.
