In most lives, the early twenties are seen as the most promising years — a time of energy, ambition and forward momentum.
For 24-year-old Sai Awn Khur, however, those years marked the moment his world unraveled.
In July 2024, he first heard the word that would change everything: cancer. The diagnosis left him stunned and overwhelmed. He feared he was going to die. When doctors confirmed that the bone cancer had progressed to Stage 4, his world collapsed. The only option to stop the disease from spreading was amputation.
“Going from living a complete and healthy life to suddenly losing a part of your body — the pain is impossible to put into words,” he recalled.
The loss extended beyond his physical condition. The relationship he cherished also began to fracture. His girlfriend, who had stood beside him when he was healthy, wanted to remain with him through his ordeal. But faced with her parents’ disapproval, they ultimately parted ways.
The illness, the amputation and the heartbreak plunged him into darkness. Following surgery, as he endured persistent physical pain, he also battled severe depression for several months.
“I cried every day. I even thought about giving up on life,” he said. At his lowest point, he found himself begging on the streets. Those days, he described, were the most humiliating and despairing of his life.
Yet he refused to surrender. After hitting rock bottom, he confronted himself with a question: “Am I going to live like this?” That moment of reckoning became his turning point. He resumed treatment with discipline and began rebuilding his mental strength.
Today, he is no longer the hopeless young man he once believed himself to be. With the aid of a prosthetic leg or crutches, he moves independently and with purpose. He now sells products online, working to regain financial independence and rebuild his life. The despair that once shadowed his face has given way to quiet confidence.
“In life, we only have two choices — to give up or to keep trying. I chose to keep trying,” he said with a smile.
His story stands as a reminder to others facing hardship: no matter how dark the night, the morning will always come.
