Muse, a volatile border town between Myanmar and China, has been rocked by a series of violent killings, with three women murdered in separate incidents over just two days. The surge in lawlessness has left residents fearful as armed groups and criminal activity continue unchecked.
On July 24, at approximately 3 p.m., two women were gunned down by unidentified assailants in Muse’s Homun Ward. Eyewitnesses described a sudden, brutal attack, with the victims dying instantly from gunfire.
“The gunmen appeared out of nowhere. The women collapsed immediately and there was no time to react or even see what weapon was used,” a local man in his 40s told SHAN.
The victims were identified as Mong Wong (Meng Wen), one a woman in her 40s and the other a broker specializing in border-crossing passes.
Just two days later, on July 26, another woman was stabbed to death near a mountain pagoda in Muse during a robbery. Witnesses reported that the attacker repeatedly stabbed her before stealing her purse and phone, leaving her to bleed out at the scene.
“She was robbed of everything including wallet, phone and left to die from multiple stab wounds. No one could help in time,” a distraught local man in his 30s recounted.
The victim, also in her 40s, became the latest casualty in Muse’s spiraling violence.
Muse, a critical trade hub in Shan State, has long struggled with lawlessness, but residents say the situation has deteriorated sharply. Over 20 militia groups, aligned with Myanmar’s military council, operate with impunity, while authorities fail to curb rampant crime, including drug trafficking, kidnappings, and targeted attacks.
Despite its economic significance as a key Myanmar-China trading post, Muse is increasingly defined by unchecked armed activity and a collapse of rule of law. Locals warn that without urgent intervention, civilian lives will remain at grave risk.
