Nawngkio civilians displaced by fighting between regime soldiers and the People’s Defence Forces (PDFs), are in desperate need of more emergency aid during the rainy season in the township in northern Shan State.

At the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp that’s been erected in Doe Pin, nine women are pregnant and three of them will give birth within a month.

“They need medicines and also food,” a volunteer told SHAN on condition of anonymity. She said that the women don’t have sanitary pads and that the pregnant women and the children need vitamins. Many of the children are sick with the flu. The pregnant women will need some pocket money to buy something after their babies are born.

IDPs sheltering in Ho Hko village in the township urgently need of clean drinking water after heavy rain polluted the stream.

Almost 1,000 from 250 families have been displaced after the BA fought with the Mandalay People’s Defence Force (PDF) in Nawngkio Township. About 600 are housed at Doe Pin Buddhist Monastery, 110 at the monastery in Ho Hko and 150 at Kalarkwe Buddhist Monastery.

“Most people couldn’t bring anything with them when they fled,” a woman helping IDPs in Doe Pin, told SHAN on condition of anonymity.

A man helping them, who also requested anonymity, said: “I think the food rations have almost run out, but I heard that a private donor could bring more.”

As tensions between the armed groups continue, it’s unlikely that anyone will return home in the foreseeable future.
