Sai Mauk Kham, the current vice president of the Union of Burma, has been nominated as a vice presidential candidate on Thursday.
Dr. Sai Mauk Kham, a Member of Parliament from the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was nominated as a candidate in a session of the lower house along with U Htin Kyaw, a trusted advisor of National League for Democracy leader Aung San Su Kyi.
Former upper house speaker, U Khin Aung Myint, and NLD Member of Parliament, Henry Van Thio, were both selected as Burma’s upper house candidates.
The military appoints the name of its candidates in which military candidates will not take part in the votes. Once chosen, the military submits the names directly to the Parliament.
The 2008 constitution gives the military 25 percent of seats in both the upper and lower house.
Dr. Sai Mauk Kham, who has served as vice president since 2011, won a Lower House (Pyithu Hluttaw) seat in northern Shan State’s Lashio Township in November 8 election last year.
The candidates for the presidency as well as vice presidents are expected to be chosen sometime next week.
