The Danu People’s Liberation Front (DPLF) has accused Myanmar’s military junta of using chemical weapons in ongoing clashes in southern Shan State, as violence escalates in the conflict-affected region of Lawk Sawk (Yat Sauk) Township.
According to a DPLF spokesperson, between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on May 20, junta aircraft dropped four suspected poison gas bombs and fired two artillery shells in the area between Loi Hawng and Hpet Yin Kone villages.
“They kept dropping bombs until yesterday. The poison gas didn’t hit our units this time, but in previous attacks, it caused serious health effects,” a DPLF soldier told SHAN. “I needed three days of treatment to recover. The military has clearly intensified its assaults.”
The DPLF has condemned the use of chemical weapons as a war crime, accusing the military council of violating international laws. The group also reported junta airstrikes in neighboring Nawngkio (Naung Cho) Township.
A resident from Pindaya said troops have been occupying local monasteries in villages between Pindaya and Lawk Sawk. “They are forcing villagers to provide rice and chickens. People are afraid,” the resident told SHAN.
The DPLF has issued a public warning, urging civilians to avoid military zones and remain alert for potential airstrikes, citing an increased risk of harm to non-combatants.
On April 21, clashes between the DPLF and junta forces reportedly resulted in casualties on both sides. The Danu People’s Liberation Army (DPLA), the armed wing of the DPLF, also captured three junta soldiers as prisoners of war.
