Landmines Prevent Farmers from Accessing Fields in Mongmit

Must read

Mongmit residents are unable to tend to their farms due to restrictions imposed by Junta soldiers, who have also scattered numerous landmines outside the town in northern Shan State, where phone and internet services have been intermittent.

A 30-year-old man from Mongmit informed SHAN that they need to dig irrigation canals and plow their fields before beginning planting. However, they fear triggering the hidden explosives around Khur Nim and Toe Pin villages.

Several incidents involving cattle and even dogs setting off the concealed explosives in the area have already been reported. One bomb detonated when a small tree branch fell to the ground.

The Kachin Independence Army and People’s Defense Force have initiated attacks on the regime’s camps in Mongmit. Since clashes began in January, over 500 houses have been destroyed in the town.
