Commentary on “Daw Suu should urge people to show humanity, says UN rights envoy”

Must read

The problem with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is that she chooses to stay silent on issues which she considers to be controversial, especially if they concern costing her the popular support of the electorate and if they would ruffle the Military or Tatmadaw’s feathers.

For example the nomenclature of Rohingya is shunned by Suu Kyi as she toes the populist line of majority thinking so as not to offend her support base, even though it can be morally incorrect to prohibitive any group of people by refusing to acknowledge the right to choose their own name for whatever reason they may have in store.

Again, Suu Kyi refused to restrain the Military’s offensives in Kachin and Shan States against the ethnic armed organizations, even though her government preaches all-inclusive participation in the peace process negotiation that it is leading.

Yanghee Lee is right, like the array of well-known and well-meaning people who have been urging her to use her influence and speak out and stand on the right side of history and correct moral commitment. But so far all these urgings have fallen on deaf ears. What a pity!
