Drug policy to be agreed before 2018

A national drug control policy will be enacted at the end of this year with a two-year action plan covering the whole country, said Police Colonel Zaw Lin Tun, secretary of the committee for the implementation of the anti-narcotics police task-force policy.

A second meeting on drawing up the policy was held at the Kempinski Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.

“The policy will be launched at the end of 2017. Then we will draw a two-year action plan to cover the whole country,” Zaw Lin Tun told the media.

The policy includes action to be taken against young drug users, action in minor drug cases and action in major drug-smuggling cases.

The officer said large hauls of drugs had been seized in the last year with foreigners among those arrested.

“We have seen progress in prevention and control of drugs. In one case, over 1,000kg of ice was seized,” he said.
