More than 50 youth from Muse went on a one-day study trip to the state legislature after being invited by their MPs.

More than 50 Kachin, Shan and Ta’ang youth from the northern town of Muse went to the Shan State parliament in Taunggyi for the first time this week.

The 54 young people are members of literature and culture associations and visited the legislature as a part of a study trip that also included the palace of former Mongpan saopha Sao San Tun, the Panglong monument and the Pindaya caves.

Sai Kyaw Thein, a state MP for Muse Constituency (1), and Kein Mai, who represents Muse’s Constitutency (2), invited the youth to come to the Shan State parliament on June 12.

“For me, it was my first time studying the Shan State parliament. We studied what MPs are doing in parliament,” Sai Hseng Leng, a member of Muse’s Shan Literature and Culture Association, told SHAN, adding, “It was only a one-day study tour. We could not study much there.”

He said he saw MPs asking questions in the legislature related to the transportation sector, but he was “not satisfied with the answers in response to their questions” because respective officials did not offer a plan related to the improvement of the sector.

Sai Hseng Laing said he would encourage youth to study both the state and Union parliaments to better understand the needs of their states as well as how the legislatures work.
