Shan Armed Groups Withdraw From Battlefield

Since early this year, RCSS/SSA and SSPP/SSA have clashed in Hsipaw township leading to the displacement of thousands of villagers.

Shan leaders from two armed groups previously fighting with each other have pulled their troops from the conflict zone in advance of the 55th anniversary of one of the groups.

The Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) celebrated its anniversary in its Wan Hai headquarters on April 24 attended by leaders, monks and villagers from the area.

“Over 2,500 people joined the celebration in the morning. Famous Shan musicians and artists also attended,” Sai Mueng told SHAN.

During SSPP/SSA Gen Tso Ten’s speech, he talked about the group’s history. There were discussions about permanently ending fighting with the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) and building unity between the two Shan groups.

Medals were presented to SSPP/SSA soldiers that have served for over twenty-five years.

Spokesperson Lt Col Sai Su told SHAN that officials held a special meeting in the afternoon attended by 300 people. Attendees asked about the SSPP/SSA’s recruitment policies and political and military issues were discussed.

“To completely halt armed conflicts near Nar Markhaw village-tract in Hsipaw township, SSPP forces withdrew from the area on April 19. RCSS forces withdrew from the area since April 24,” Lt Col Sai Su said.

Since early this year, RCSS/SSA and SSPP/SSA have clashed in Hsipaw township leading to the displacement of thousands of villagers.

Mong Hpong abbot U Nyanna Sanwara (Khuwah Wongson) and other monks successfully negotiated for the SSPP/SSA and RCSS/SSA to end fighting in late March.

Withdrawing troops from areas where the two groups previously fought is the latest breakthrough for achieving sustainable peace in the region.
